Where Is It From? Tangerine Quartz Meaning

These crystals primarily come from Brazil, in the Sanhinto mine in Minas Gerais.

The meaning of the name of this stone is simple as it is related to its color, as it is called after the lovely orangey peach color of Tangerine orange citrus fruits.

Although it was called for this orange color some stones are not bright orange.

The color of a particular stone does relate to the actual amount of iron that a specific crystal contains.

The specific color of Tangerine Quartz has been created by the presence in the water of good amounts of the mineral Hematite which is high in iron.

When Hematite rusts, it fills the water present with this mineral. Sometimes the minerals occurs as a fine surface coating but can be a more obvious encrustation.

Depending on exactly when the hematite is added to individual stones, it may be inside the crystals or on the surface. 

All types of Quartz forms over many years, and over time layers are added to individual crystals, and if these layers contain minerals it creates their color.

Note: some stones can be very pale almost yellow colored right through to a deep rusty orange that is almost red colored.

Most of these crystals are a beautiful pale orange color, and while some can have an external covering or encrustation, many are lovely smooth stones.

These stones are a variety of quartz crystal, and like other quartz varieties are comprised of silicon dioxide. 

It is the inclusion of other minerals, in this case iron oxide, which causes the orange color.
