Where Is It From? Glendonite Meaning

The meaning of this stones name specifically relates to the location where it was first discovered at Glendon in NSW Australia.

Although it is known as a rare mineral, it has since been found in Siberia in Russia, Antarctica, South Africa, in the Congo, Greenland, British Columbia in Canada and in California in the United States.

It is what is known as a pseudomorph, and this type of calcite pseudomorph is formed in relationship with the mineral Ikaite, when it gets extremely hot.

The mineral Ikaite is unstable, and if it loses its water content when it gets hot, it turns to Calcite. 

Ikaite is a hexahydrate of calcium carbonate, and occurs in a rhombohedral formation.

The color of Glendonite is usually brown, although it varies from a light grey brown through to a very dark brown.

This mineral commonly occurs in some rather interesting spiky shapes, and many are found in a radial formation. These shapes remain when the Ikaite becomes Glendonite.

When it occurs with sandstone, like the one shown in the picture, it is also known as Schmoo, so these different names may be seen in crystal shops.
