The meaning of this stone relates to the place it was first found, in the Larvik region in Norway

It was named for the town of Larvik which is located close to where it is found.

It is an uncommon stone but has also been found in an area close to Quebec in Canada. In Norway it is also known as Blue Pearl Granite or Blue Norwegian Moonstone.

It is found selling under other names but these are not so common. This includes Blue Pearl, Pearlspar or Birds Eye Granite.

While this mineral is not in the same family as Labradorite, many pieces exhibit a shining optical effect, so it is often believed to be a type of Labradorite.

This shining look is known as the schiller effect and is caused by layers of special material below the surface of the stone that helps to reflect light.

Within Larvikite this light is exhibited by a silver blue sheen that is comprised of blue sparkles within black, deep blue or dark grey stone.

It is a type of feldspar, an igneous mineral occurring within titanium rich rock. It may also contain inclusions of quartz or nepheline within a mix of plagioclase and feldspar.
