Limonite Meaning

The meaning of the mineral name Limonite relates to a word from the Greek 'leimōn'. It is a generic name for the iron oxide mineral.

This Greek word means 'wet meadow' or 'marshy lake' as it is has been found as bog iron ore in meadows or marshes since ancient times.

When it was discovered by Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann in 1813, he first called it Limonit, the name for bog ore, but this was later altered.

Bog iron or brown iron ore has been found in boggy areas since prehistoric times. Limonite deposits have been mined to use for making iron for 2500 years.

Limonite is an ore of iron found in sedimentary rocks and is comprised of a mix of various types of iron oxide minerals but particularly hydroxide of iron.

In some places these iron minerals form in layers with silicate minerals. The yellow ore was used in Cyprus since early times to make yellow limonite pigment or yellow ochre.

It is a top source of iron, and is one of a number of minerals used for the production of iron.

Where Does Limonite Come From?

This is a fairly common mineral with deposits of Limonite found in a large number of places including Russia, France, Germany, Luxemburg, Italy, China, Namibia, Zaire, India, Australia, Cuba, Brazil and the United States.

Limonite forms in sedimentary beds and from the weathering of metals such as pyrite, magnetite or brown hematite also known as brown iron ore.

It is one of the minerals that make up the limonite pseudomorph Prophecy Stone, which is a pseudomorph of Limonite and Hematite after Marcasite or Pyrite.

Its mineral structure can be cubic, and it also occurs in the massive form or with a botryoidal structure and often forms as grape-like nodules or configurations.

The color of Limonite gemstones may be yellow, yellow brown, orange, reddish brown, dark brown or black colors.

A Limonite after Pyrite pseudomorph has the same crystalline form as Pyrite, as it retains the shape of the Pyrite crystal.

It is differentiated from the mineral species Goethite, another stone in this mineral group, as Goethite crystals have a lack of cleavage.

Best Crystals To Use With Limonite

What are the best crystals to combine with Limonite?

These stones have a good energy to boost your intuition, but if you feel you want more help, combine them with other crystals that boost intuitive gifts.

Specific crystals that may be beneficial to use in combination with Limonite includes Green Kyanite, Celestial Quartz which is also called Candle Quartz, Peruvian Pink Opal or Neptunite.
