Abraham Gottlieb Werner named it in 1789 and this came from his germanic background as the name relates to the German language.

The meaning of the name Hornblende relates to an old German word 'blende', meaning 'to deceive', as often it looks similar to other more valuable minerals.

The part of the name 'horn' relates to the dark color which is the most common it comes in. 

Its color is usually quite dark, including black, dark brown and dark green, as well as other shades of blue, green, yellow or red-yellow.

They are metamorphic rocks that occur as compact masses as well as hairs, prismatic crystals, fibrous masses and a coating on stones.

This is a volcanic rock that is found in many intrusive igneous rocks and is one of the calcium-amphibole minerals.

It is a fairly common mineral and has been found in a number of places including South Africa, Australia, East Germany, Scotland, Italy, Canada and various parts of the United States.

It is said to have been used by Native Americans in the past, and has an unusual appearance that can sometimes resemble angel wings.

It is a constituent of Apache Tears, a type of Obsidian that has a strange out-of-shape appearance.
