Where Is It From? Ilvaite Meaning

The meaning of the name of this stone comes from the location where it was first discovered on the Italian island of Elba, which is located in the Mediterranean Sea. Its name comes from the Latin word 'ilva', which is the original name of the island of Elba.

Also known as Yenite, this is a silicate mineral that contains iron and calcium and is a member of the sorosilicate subclass.

Although its color is commonly a deep opaque iron-black, it may also be dark gray or brownish black. 

It is commonly found in contact metamorphic rocks or in calcium bearing ore deposits known as skarn.

It occurs as orthorhombic or monoclinic crystals as well as columnar masses and as prismatic crystals.

As mentioned above, this black mineral was first discovered in Italy but has since been located in a few other areas, but not all places have large deposits.

It has been found in Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Aegean Islands in Greece, Russia, Inner Mongolia in China and in the USA.

It may also be found combined with other minerals.
