They are found in many oceans of the world but are more prolific in the seas off the tropical and sub-tropical regions and often grow in dark places.

They are said to be found in the waters off the Philippines, in New Zealand, in the Mediterranean Sea, in the Gulf of Mexico and off Hawaii.

It is the skeleton of these corals that are collected and as they are long lived it may be hard to obtain. This coral variety grows like a tree and when it is alive is known to be brightly colored.

It is said to be the state gem of Hawaii and it can be bought from many crystal sellers although it is not always found on their web-sites, so contact your favorite seller to see if they have pieces that are not displayed.

Some coral sold is reconstituted from tiny pieces so may have glues and other such things mixed in to stabilize the stone, especially if it is being made into jewelry.
