Where Is It From? Pyrolusite Meaning

This mineral is found in a number of places including in Germany, Czech Republic, Russia, Morocco, Japan, China, India, Ghana, South Africa, Australia, Canada, Cuba and the United States.

It is a common manganese mineral that is mined for industrial use, not for metaphysical purposes. It mined predominantly for the production of iron and to de-colorize glass.

It is this purpose from which its name came, as its name comes from the Greek words 'fire' and 'to wash' as it was used to remove marks from the glass.

It occurs in combination with other metallic minerals including silver and zinc and is found intergrown with Goethite and Hematite which are iron oxide rich stones, and it has been found as an inclusion in quartz crystal.

Pyrolusite Mineral Makeup and Colors

Pyrolusite mineral make-up is primarily comprised of manganese oxide and may be found with other manganese minerals including Romanechite, another potent manganese rich stone.

Many of these stones are quite soft, even brittle and when touched may leave a black mark on your hands. They will break easily if carried in your pocket, see more above.

The color of these stones is commonly a deep iron-black, bluish black, dark gray or grey-blue.

There are two types of this stone with the second less common variety being known as Velvet Pyrolusite.

The velvet type has a velvety form and a fibrous radiating structure, and also has a number of different metaphysical properties.

These stones commonly form in a radiating shape, as hexagonal crystals or in the granular or massive form.
